The Snow Melts… I Promise! & How to Build a Deck – Part 1
By now your probably thinking that you’ve had enough. I know I have, and I plow this crap for a living from December to March! So seeing as we are going into over two decades here at LASKO Construction, we are going to publish a series of blog posts on deck building. Im going to do it in a series of logical progressions starting from the ground up.
Part 1 – Footings
Over the years the requirements for supporting the load of a deck and its many or few occupants have increased in size. Virtually all aspects of deck building have evolved constantly with the ever changing Building Code. In a house, the building is supported by its foundation, and deck footings are your deck’s foundation.
When building a deck, you must take into account the way its going to be used, and by how many people it will carry. These numbers will dictate the size and scope of the entire deck from its frame down to the footing size and spacing. For most decks built 3-5 feet off the found, the actual location of the footings is not a real issue as they will be hidden under the deck. But, for elevated decks 1 storey off grade or greater, footing placement is critical. After all, do you want to look out your basement window into a sea of deck posts? probably not. The answer to this then lies with of course footing placement relative to the span of the framing (see later blog posts on framing), and the actual size of the footing. Its a pretty simple premise. the bigger the footing diameter, the greater the load it can cary, thus the greater the span that can be had between footings. Don’t fret, all this information is readily available from your local city building and planning department.
